The Shoe Box

There was once a man and woman who had been married for more
than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked
about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other,
except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top
of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to
open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never
thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got
very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In
trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took
down the shoe box and took it to his wife’s bedside. She
agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the
box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted doilies and a
stack of money totaling $25,000. He asked her about the
contents…

“When we were to be married,” she said, “my grandmother
told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue.
She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just
keep quiet and crochet a doily.”

The little old man was so moved, he had to fight back tears.
Only two precious doilies were in the box. She had only been
angry with him two times in all those years of living and
loving. He almost burst with happiness.

“Honey,” he said, “that explains the doilies, but what about
all of this money? Where did it come from?”

“Oh,” she said, “that’s the money I made from selling the
doilies.”

Stone Soup

Many years ago three soldiers, hungry and weary of battle,
came upon a small village. The villagers, suffering a meager
harvest and the many years of war, quickly hid what little
they had to eat and met the three at the village square,
wringing their hands and bemoaning the lack of anything to
eat.

The soldiers spoke quietly among themselves and the first
soldier then turned to the village elders. “Your tired
fields have left you nothing to share, so we will share what
little we have: the secret of how to make soup from stones.”

Naturally the villagers were intrigued and soon a fire was
put to the town’s greatest kettle as the soldiers dropped
in three smooth stones. “Now this will be a fine soup”,
said the second soldier; “but a pinch of salt and some
parsley would make it wonderful!” Up jumped a villager,
crying “What luck! I’ve just remembered where some’s been
left!” And off she ran, returning with an apronful of
parsley and a turnip. As the kettle boiled on, the memory
of the village improved: soon barley, carrots, beef and
cream had found their way into the great pot, and a cask of
wine was rolled into the square as all sat down to feast.

They ate and danced and sang well into the night, refreshed
by the feast and their new-found friends. In the morning the
three soldiers awoke to find the entire village standing
before them. At their feet lay a satchel of the village’s
best breads and cheese. “You have given us the greatest of
gifts: the secret of how to make soup from stones”, said an
elder, “and we shall never forget.” The third soldier turned
to the crowd, and said, “There is no secret, but this is
certain: it is only by sharing that we may make a feast.”
And off the soldiers wandered, down the road.

Piano Players

A mother wished to encourage her small girl’s interest in
the piano and so took her a local concert featuring an
excellent pianist. In the entrance foyer the mother met an
old friend and the two stopped to talk. The little girl was
keen to see inside the hall and so wandered off, unnoticed
by her mother. The girl’s mother became concerned when she
entered the hall and could see no sign of her daughter.
Staff were notified and an announcement was made asking the
audience to look out for the little lost girl. With the
concert due to start, the little girl had still not been
found. In preparation for the pianist’s entrance, the
curtains drew aside, to reveal the little girl sitting at
the great piano, focused in concentration, quietly picking
out the notes of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

The audience’s amusement turned to curiosity when the
pianist entered the stage, walked up to the little girl, and
said “Keep playing.”

The pianist sat down beside her, listened for a few seconds,
and whispered some more words of encouragement. He then
began quietly to play a bass accompaniment, and then a few
bars later reached around the little girl to add more
accompaniment. At the end of the impromptu performance the
audience applauded loudly as the pianist took the little
girl back to her seat to be reunited with her mother. The
experience was inspirational for everyone, not least the
small girl.

It takes just a few moments to make somebody’s day, to help
someone with their own personal aims and dreams -
especially someone who looks up to you for encouragement and
support.

The Uncertainty Principle
By: Adam Khan From his book “Self-Help Stuff That Works”

Two sailors ran into each other in a pub. Over a few beers,
one of the men told the other about his last voyage: “After
a month at sea,” he said, “we discovered our masts had been
eaten through by termites! Almost nothing left of them.”

“That’s terrible,” said the second sailor.

“That’s what I thought at first too,” the first sailor said,
“but it turned out to be good luck. As soon as we took the
sails down to fix the masts, we were hit by a squall so
suddenly and so hard, it would surely have blown us over if
our sails were up at the time.”

“How lucky!”

“That’s exactly what I thought at the time, too. But because
our sails were down, we couldn’t steer ourselves, and
because of the wind, we were blown onto a reef. The hole in
the hull was too big to fix. We were stranded.”

“That is bad luck indeed.”

“That’s what I thought, too, when it first happened. But we
all made it to the beach alive and had plenty to eat. But
now here’s the real kicker: While we were on the island
whining about our terrible fate, we discovered a buried
treasure!”

As this story illustrates, you don’t know if an event is
“good” or “bad” except maybe in retrospect, and even then
you don’t really know because life keeps going. The story’s
not over yet. Just because something hasn’t turned out to be

Smell The Roses

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago
whose husband unexpectedly died of a heart attack. About a
week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a
classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came
streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was
nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her
desk and sat down there.

With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and
said, ‘Before class is over, I would like to share with all
of you a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I
feel is very important. Each of us is put here on earth to
learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves…and
none of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It
can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is God’s way of
telling us that we must make the most out of every single
day.’

Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, ‘So I would like
you all to make me a promise… from now on, on your way to
school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to
notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see — it could
be a scent — perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of
someone’s house, or it could be the sound of the breeze
slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the
morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to
the ground. Please, look for these things, and cherish them.
For, although it may sound trite to some, these things are
the ’stuff’ of life. The little things we are put here on
earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted. We must
make it important to notice them, for at any time… it can
all be taken away.’

The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books
and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I
noticed more things on my way home from school than I had
that whole semester. Every once in a while, I think of that
teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of
us, and I try to appreciate all of those things that
sometimes we all overlook.

Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour
today. Go barefoot. Or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off
on the way home tonight to get a double-dip ice cream cone.
For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we
often regret, but the things we didn’t do.

Fish or Fish Oil Capsules for Heart Disease?

A lot has been said, and written, about fish, fish oil
capsules, and Omega-3 fats when it comes to heart disease.
However, the never ending questions are: what is better for
my heart, fish or fish oil capsules? Can I replace fish with
fish oil capsules and obtain the same health benefits? Well,
here is the answer.

The American Heart Association and several other groups
recommend Omega-3s, the main fat found in fish and fish oil
capsules, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, there has been little research on whether the body
processes fats from fish oil capsules and fish in the same
way. To investigate the matter, Dr. Harris, from the
University of South Dakota and his team had a group of 11
women eat two servings of tuna or salmon each week, while
another group of 12 women took the same amount of omega-3s,
an estimated 485 milligrams daily, in capsule form.

Catch Of A Lifetime

There was once an 11 year old who went fishing every chance
he got from the dock at his family’s cabin on an island in
the middle of a New Hampshire lake. On the day before bass
season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the
evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied
on a small silver lure and practiced casting. The lure
struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset,
then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.

When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on
the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy
skillfully worked the fish alongside the dock. Finally he
very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It
was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills
playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a
match and looked at his watch. It was 10 p.m. — two hours
before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the
boy. “You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.

“Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his
father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked
around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere
around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father.

Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know
what time he caught the fish, the body could tell by the
clarity of his father’s voice that the decision was not
negotiable. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the
huge bass, and lowered it into the black water.

The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The
boy suspected that he would never again see such a great
fish.

That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful
architect in New York City. His father’s cabin is still
there on the lake. He takes his own son and daughters
fishing from the same dock.

And he was right. He has never again caught such a
magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago.
But he does see that same fish…again and again…every
time he comes up against a question of ethics. For, as his
father taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and
wrong. It is only the practice of ethics that is difficult.

Do we do right when no one is looking? Do we refuse to cut
corners to get the design in on time? Or refuse to trade
stocks based on information that we know we aren’t
supposed to have? We would if we were taught to put the
fish back when we were young. For we would have learned the
truth. The decision to do right lives fresh and fragrant in
our memory. It is a story we will proudly tell our friends
and grandchildren. Not about how we had a chance to beat
the system and took it, but about how we did the right
thing and were forever strengthened.

STRENGTH VS. WEAKNESS

The following is the story of one 10-year-old boy who
decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his
left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The
boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after
three months of training, the master had taught him only one
move.

“Sensei,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning
more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move
you’ll ever need to know,” the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the
boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first
tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first
two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult,
but after some time, his opponent became impatient and
charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more
experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched.
Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a
time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei
intervened.

“No,” the sensei insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical
mistake; He dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his
move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the
tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and the sensei reviewed every move
in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage
to ask what was really on his mind.

“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First,
you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in
all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that
move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.
